Songs of the Month: June 2011

Note: This post also includes the top 10 songs this year, to today (YTD).

This month was filled with many huge releases. So many, in fact, that "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall" only earns honorable mention from Coldplay. If this stunning song didn't make it, which ones did?

3. "Best Thing I Never Had" - Beyoncé

In a year led by mainstream pop and electronic music, Beyoncé is able to pull out a ballad hit with "Best Thing I Never Had". It has yet to rise to the ranks of stardom, but it's steadily been rising in sales and airplay, and is currently in the top 20 on iTunes in the US. Also, it's just landed a cool #3 in the UK charts!

What does this mean for Beyoncé? Everything, since her recent album "4" is flopping horribly, losing out to DJ Fresh in the UK. Although there aren't any more likely top releases from "4", "Best Thing I Never Had" is exactly what the Queen B needs to stay at the top of the music world. It's a beautiful ballad, and I suggest to everyone to buy this song off of "4" and scrap the rest of the album - for now, at least.

2. Moves Like Jagger - Maroon 5 & Christina Aguilera

The Voice was an extremely solid music show this year, pulling out big hits from left and right with such names as Dia Frampton and Javier Colon, the eventual winner. However, the only artist collab from the hit TV show is "Moves Like Jagger", which features judges Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera, and made a tiny dent in nearly everyone's wallet this past week.

As for the song itself, it's not really anything to brag about. A few good spots - especially with Christina Aguilera - highlight the song, but it's nothing more than conventional pop. I would tell any fans of The Voice to buy it, but we all know that they've all bought it already.

1. How to Love - Lil' Wayne

I have one word to say about this magnificent hit: Wow. Who would have thought that Lil' Wayne, of all people, would pull a song like "How to Love" out of his songwriting bag? Although I may not love all of Lil' Wayne's numerous samples on songs this year, he has made a top 10 hit out of "How to Love".

Lil' Wayne's generally known for his raps. However, in "How to Love", he sings his heart out without saying "Young Money" even once! It's also nice to see him have a hit on his own, without Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias, Kelly Rowland or DJ Khaled, to name a few.

Now, as mentioned before, here are the top 10 hits on the Project: Mobius Fab 50 so far this year! These songs have charmed myself and the rest of the music world, and are truly 10 of the best songs overall in 2011.
