After the surprising, prolonging success of "Super Bass", Nicki Minaj sets out to charm us on her next single from Pink Friday, "Fly", which happens to feature one of the best talents in music today (Rihanna). Many other singles from Pink Friday haven't had the success that "Super Bass" was blessed with, however. Does "Fly" have the talent needed for another Nicki Minaj hit? The review's in the full article!
Do you remember the B.O.B. and Hayley Williams single "Airplanes"? Last year's hit and "Fly" have more in common with each other than just a high-flying title. They are both strong songs with simple choruses and powerful verses. Generally, it would be a good thing to be compared to a song as excellent as "Airplanes" - and that's exactly the case we have here, as "Fly" manages to blow me out of the park.
If you know me, you know that I can't stand Nicki Minaj's general rapping, partly due to her tone and partly due to her nonsensical rhyming schemes. However, "Fly" was written better than any other single release from Minaj to date, and it shows here; if someone would like to challenge me on that, feel free to do so. The lyrics are written wonderfully, and Minaj rarely repeats herself in an annoying fashion.
I'm going to make a pretty bold prediction here, and say that "Fly" is definitely going to become a #1 hit on Billboard, not to mention my chart. This song not only has the potential to become this year's "Airplanes", but could very well end up being this year's "Love the Way You Lie", and should be a shoo-in for "Song of the Year" nomination honors at the Grammys in 2012.

You have A LOT of faith in this song lol I'm not a huge fan of Nicki either but I do admit this song it pretty good but I don't think it's worth a Song of The Year Grammy nod. I did like the review though.
ReplyDeleteI'm excited this was chosen as the next single. When I reviewed the album many months ago, I said I thought this could give her the mainstream success that, at the time, had eluded her. Of course that came with "Super Bass," which I hadn't heard at the time, since that's only the deluxe version of the album. Nonetheless, I still really like this song, and I think it could be another big hit for her.
ReplyDelete@Romeo - Haha. I can see where you're coming from, but a lot of my prediction has to do with the music industry today. Songs with an extremely powerful chorus and emotional rapped verses have traditionally been extremely popular releases. With a song as well-designed as "Fly", I don't see how it could be any different.
ReplyDelete@Ww_adh - I would agree with your assessment, although I must admit that I don't believe "Super Bass" was written extremely well, and I think it's become popular due to its good beat and catchy bass. I don't feel a backbone in "Super Bass", but it apparently didn't need one to be successful.
